The Toyota Harrier and the Mazda CX-5 are two of Kenya's favourite crossovers. Both are reliable when looked after. However, each has its own needs: the Harrier's CVT gearbox and the CX-5's SkyActiv engines and i-stop battery need the right care. This guide explains what to expect.

Is a Toyota Harrier expensive to maintain in Kenya?
No, not if you service it on time. The Harrier shares parts with the RAV4 and other Toyotas, so spares are easy to find. The Harrier Premium 2.0, which lands at about KES 4.3M – 4.9M, uses a simple petrol engine. The hybrid adds a battery system, which is very reliable but needs a hybrid-trained mechanic.
Harrier CVT gearbox: fluid changes and repairs
Most petrol Harriers use a CVT (continuously variable transmission). CVTs are smooth and efficient. However, they dislike old fluid and harsh driving. Change the CVT fluid at the interval in the service schedule, or sooner if you drive mostly in traffic or on rough roads. Use the correct Toyota CVT fluid, not a generic one.
Warning signs include shuddering, a whining noise or slipping. If these appear, see a CVT specialist in Nairobi quickly. A gearbox replacement costs far more than regular fluid changes.
Dashboard cracks and interior wear
Older XU60 Harriers can show dashboard cracks after years in strong sun. Use a sunshade and dashboard cover. Repairs are possible, but replacement dashboards are costly.
Driver aids and sound systems
Newer Harriers have lane departure warning and other driver aids. After windscreen replacement or front-end repairs, the camera may need calibration. Similarly, JBL sound systems in higher grades are best repaired by an audio specialist rather than replaced.
Mazda CX-5 maintenance in Kenya

SkyActiv engine oil
SkyActiv engines need the correct oil grade, usually a thin low-viscosity oil for petrols and a low-ash oil for diesels. Using the wrong oil can harm the engine and, on diesels, the DPF. Change oil on time.
i-stop battery replacement
Many CX-5s have i-stop, which switches the engine off at standstill. It needs a special battery that handles frequent restarts. When it weakens, i-stop stops working and warning lights may appear. Fit the correct i-stop battery, not a standard one. Battery shops across Nairobi stock them.
Transmission fluid
The CX-5 uses a conventional automatic gearbox. Change the fluid as the schedule recommends, especially if you drive in heavy traffic.
DPF regeneration and carbon build-up
Diesel CX-5s use a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Short trips stop it from cleaning itself. Therefore, take regular highway drives. Some garages offer DPF cleaning and intake valve carbon cleaning for affected cars.
Electronic parking brake faults
Some CX-5s show electronic parking brake warnings. Often, the cause is a weak battery or a worn brake caliper motor. A diagnostic scan shows the fault.
Coolant leaks on diesels
Watch for coolant loss on diesel CX-5s. Find and fix the leak early.
Bose sound system and side mirrors
Bose speakers can be repaired by audio specialists. Side mirrors are a common theft target in Nairobi, so use mirror locks or engraving and secure parking.
Spare parts in Nairobi
Parts for both cars are widely available on Kirinyaga Road, in Industrial Area and through dealers. Genuine parts cost more but last longer. Good-quality aftermarket parts can be fine for items like filters and brake pads. However, use genuine parts for gearboxes, sensors and safety systems.
Choosing a mechanic
Look for a garage that specialises in Toyota or Mazda, has a proper diagnostic scanner and gives written quotes. Ask other owners for recommendations, whether you are in Kilimani, Ngong Road, Industrial Area or elsewhere. Keep every receipt, since service records raise resale value.
