Japanese Car English Conversion in Nairobi: Radio, Navigation, Dashboard, Manuals and Software Explained

Imported a car from Japan and the screen is in Japanese? Here is how radio, navigation, dashboard menus, FM bands and manuals are converted to English in Nairobi, and what each option costs you in features.

Japanese car English conversion in Nairobi: Toyota Harrier imported by Elisa Motors

Japanese car English conversion in Nairobi is one of the first jobs many new owners face. Cars built for the Japanese market have Japanese-language radios, navigation systems and sometimes dashboard menus. Moreover, their FM radios use a different frequency band from Kenya. As a result, some stations do not tune in at all.

The good news is that conversion is routine in Nairobi. Specialists convert radios, replace screens, translate menus and supply English manuals. However, the right option depends on your car, budget and the features you want to keep. Therefore, this guide explains each choice.

Furthermore, it explains how Elisa Motors can arrange conversion before delivery, so your car arrives ready to use.

Why Japanese cars need conversion

Japanese domestic market cars are designed for Japanese drivers. The navigation system shows Japanese maps and language. The radio covers Japan's FM band, which runs from about 76 to 95 MHz. Kenya's FM stations run from about 88 to 108 MHz. Consequently, many Kenyan stations above 95 MHz are missing.

Some cars also have Japanese text in the dashboard display, climate control or settings menus. Similarly, the owner's manual is usually in Japanese.

Option 1: FM band expander

A band expander is a small device that shifts the radio's frequency range. It lets the original radio receive Kenyan FM stations. It is cheap and quick. However, the screen and menus stay in Japanese. Therefore, it suits buyers who only need the radio to work.

Option 2: Original unit language change

Some factory units, especially on newer Toyotas, Mazdas and Hondas, have an English language option hidden in the settings or available through dealer software. A specialist can enable it. As a result, you keep the original screen, cameras and steering-wheel controls.

However, the Japanese navigation maps usually remain Japan-only. Most owners use phone navigation through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto where supported.

Option 3: Replace with an Android head unit

The most popular option in Nairobi is replacing the factory unit with an Android screen. It offers English menus, Kenyan FM, Bluetooth, Google Maps, YouTube and apps. Moreover, many units support reverse cameras and steering-wheel controls.

However, quality varies widely. Cheap units can be slow, crash or drain the battery. Also, on some cars the factory unit controls other features, such as climate settings, cameras or vehicle settings. Removing it can lose those features. Therefore, choose a model-specific unit from a reputable installer.

Option 4: Dashboard and menu translation

Some cars, especially hybrids and luxury models, show Japanese text in the instrument cluster or settings. Specialists can sometimes change the language through diagnostic software. In other cases, translated stickers or a printed guide help. Ask your installer what is possible for your model.

English owner's manuals

Many Japanese models have close equivalents sold in other English-speaking markets. As a result, English manuals are often available online or from specialists. In addition, translated quick guides cover common functions like the climate control, driving modes and warning lights.

Hybrid system software and checks

Hybrid owners in Nairobi sometimes ask for "software updates". Dealers and specialists can check for updates and fault codes in the hybrid system. Moreover, they can test the hybrid battery health. This matters for cars like the Aqua, Prius and Vezel Hybrid. Read our hybrid import guide.

Hybrid battery replacement in Nairobi

Hybrid batteries usually last many years. When they weaken, symptoms include warning lights, poor fuel economy and the engine running more often. Options include new genuine batteries, reconditioned batteries and individual module replacement. Specialists along Kirinyaga Road and in Industrial Area offer these services.

Genuine batteries cost the most but last longest. Reconditioned batteries cost less but vary in quality. Therefore, choose a specialist who offers a warranty.

Car batteries for Japanese cars

Many Japanese cars use battery sizes common in Kenya. However, cars with stop-start systems, such as some Mazdas, need special batteries. Moreover, hybrids have a small 12-volt battery as well as the main hybrid battery. Fit the correct type to avoid electrical faults.

Navigation and maps

Japanese navigation maps do not cover Kenya. Therefore, most owners use Google Maps or Waze on a phone, either through CarPlay or Android Auto, or on an Android head unit. In contrast, trying to load Kenyan maps into factory Japanese units is rarely practical.

Which option should you choose?

If you only need the radio, choose a band expander. If your car's original unit supports English, enable it and keep your factory features. If you want apps, Bluetooth and Kenyan FM in one screen, choose a quality Android unit. Moreover, check what features the factory unit controls before removing it.

Common conversion mistakes

First, buying the cheapest Android unit, which often fails quickly. Second, removing a factory unit that controls cameras or climate settings. Third, poor wiring that drains the battery or causes electrical faults. Moreover, forgetting to keep the original unit, which helps resale. Therefore, choose a reputable installer and keep the original parts.

Does conversion affect resale?

A tidy, working English setup helps resale in Kenya. However, a badly installed screen can put buyers off. Keeping the original unit lets the next owner choose. Similarly, a car with a factory English option enabled is usually the most attractive.

Model-by-model notes

Toyota Harrier, RAV4 and Corolla Cross

Newer Toyotas often have a factory display that controls cameras and some vehicle settings. Therefore, many owners enable English on the original unit and use phone mirroring for navigation. If you replace it, choose a unit that supports the cameras.

Toyota Aqua, Prius and Fielder Hybrid

These hybrids often have simpler audio units. A band expander or a basic Android unit works well. Moreover, the hybrid energy display may remain in Japanese on some older units, which most owners accept.

Mazda CX-5 and CX-30

Mazda Connect units can often be switched to English. In addition, many later models support CarPlay and Android Auto after an update. Consequently, Mazdas are among the easiest to convert.

Honda Vezel and Fit

Honda Gathers units vary by year. Some switch to English. Others need replacement. Similarly, check that the reverse camera works after conversion.

Land Cruiser and Prado

Higher grades have integrated displays with multi-terrain cameras. Replacing them can lose camera functions. Therefore, many Prado owners prefer language changes or dedicated adapters. Read our Prado price guide.

Other small fixes after import

Some Japanese cars have speed warning chimes set for Japanese limits. Specialists can often disable them. Moreover, ETC toll card readers are useless in Kenya and can be removed. Similarly, Japanese-language voice prompts in parking sensors may be changed or muted on some models.

Finally, check the clock, temperature units and fuel economy display. Most can be switched to Kenyan-friendly settings in the menus.

Choosing an installer in Nairobi

Look for an installer with experience on your exact model. Ask to see previous work and check reviews. Moreover, ask for a warranty on the unit and the wiring. A good installer uses proper harness adapters instead of cutting factory wires. As a result, the work can be reversed later if needed.

Many installers operate around Kirinyaga Road, Ngara, Industrial Area and along Ngong Road. Prices and quality vary. Therefore, compare at least two quotes.

Budgeting for conversion

Include conversion in your overall car budget. A band expander costs little. A quality Android unit costs more, and premium model-specific units cost more again. Moreover, add the cost of a reverse camera if your car lacks one. We include these options in your quote if you ask.

Honda Vezel: conversion notes and prices

Here is how each Honda Vezel version we import compares. All of them seat 5, and you can import them from Japan.

Honda Vezel G 1.5. This version uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 131 hp, a cvt automatic gearbox and two-wheel drive. In addition, it returns about 17 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 2.2M – 2.5M.

Honda Vezel Hybrid Z 1.5. This version uses a 1.5-litre hybrid engine with 152 hp, a 7-speed dct gearbox and two-wheel drive. Moreover, it returns about 26 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 2.5M – 2.9M.

Honda Vezel e:HEV Z (2021+). This version uses a 1.5-litre hybrid engine with 131 hp, a e-cvt automatic gearbox and two-wheel drive. As a result, it returns about 25 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 2.9M – 3.4M.

Every Honda Vezel we import includes these key features: compact hybrid SUV, magic Seats, honda Sensing, premium interior and LED lamps.

Vezel owners often choose a model-specific Android unit that keeps the reverse camera and steering controls. Similarly, the e:HEV models from 2021 often support phone mirroring after setup. Read our compact SUV guide and best SUVs under 5 million guide for more on the Vezel and its rivals. Moreover, browse all Honda models we import.

Conversion timeline

Most conversions take a few hours to a day. A band expander is often fitted in under an hour. In contrast, a full Android unit with camera integration may take most of a day. Therefore, plan conversion together with your first service, so the car is off the road only once. We schedule both before delivery when you ask, so you collect a car that is serviced, converted and ready.

Where we deliver

We serve buyers across Nairobi, including Kilimani, Westlands, South B, South C, Syokimau, Ruaka and Rongai. We also serve Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, Thika, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Machakos, Meru and Kakamega. At the coast, we serve Mombasa, Nyali and Malindi.
