Jiji, Car Yards or a Fresh Import? How to Buy a Used Range Rover, V8, G-Wagon, Harrier or Prado in Kenya

How locally used listings on Jiji and in Nairobi yards compare with fresh imports, the checks every local car needs, and when importing from Japan, the UK or Dubai is better.

locally used vs imported car in Kenya: Toyota Harrier imported by Elisa Motors

Before most Kenyans import a car, they check Jiji. They search for a Range Rover on Jiji, a Toyota V8 on Jiji Nairobi or a Harrier on Jiji, and they visit yards along Mombasa Road, Ngong Road and in Kilimani. Locally used cars are right there. However, they come with risks a fresh import avoids.

This guide compares locally used cars on Jiji, Pigiame, Carmudi-style listings and in showrooms with fresh imports from Japan, the UK and Dubai.

Where locally used cars are sold

Online classifieds: Jiji and Pigiame

Jiji is Kenya's largest classifieds site for cars, and Pigiame is another long-running platform. Carmudi was also a well-known car site in Kenya. These sites list cars from dealers and private sellers. They are useful for checking market prices. However, listings are not verified, and photos can be old or borrowed.

Car yards and showrooms

Yards along Mombasa Road, Ngong Road, Kiambu Road, Kilimani and Westlands sell both fresh imports and locally used cars. Some focus on crossovers, others on premium SUVs. You can test-drive immediately.

Franchised dealers

Franchised dealers sell new cars and some approved pre-owned stock. Prices are higher, but history is clearer.

Locally used vs fresh import: the key differences

Age. Many locally used luxury SUVs are older than the import window. In 2026, imports must be 2019 or newer. A 2015 Range Rover on Jiji can only ever be a local car. Mileage. Local mileage is hard to verify. In contrast, imports have auction sheets, export certificates or UK MOT records.

History. A local car may have been in accidents, floods or hard fleet use. Price. Local cars often look cheaper. However, they may need suspension, gearbox or engine work soon. Resale. A fresh import with documented history resells better.

Locally used prices: Range Rover, V8, G-Wagon, Harrier, CX-5 and Prado

Locally used prices vary enormously with condition, so there is no reliable price list. Instead, compare any local car with our fresh-import prices below. These are landed and registered.

For bigger SUVs, a LC200 VX lands at KES 13M – 16M and a G400d at KES 20M – 24M. If a local car is only slightly cheaper than these, the import is usually the better buy.

Checks every locally used car needs

1. NTSA logbook search

Run an official logbook search on the NTSA eCitizen (TIMS/NTSA) portal. It confirms the registered owner, any joint owners such as a bank, and the car's details. Never buy a car with a bank still on the logbook unless the loan is cleared at handover.

2. Chassis and engine numbers

Match the chassis and engine numbers on the car with the logbook. Differences are a serious red flag.

3. Mileage and service history

Ask for service records. Check wear on the steering wheel, pedals and seats. If the car is ex-Japan, ask for the original auction sheet. Read our mileage check guide.

4. Mechanical inspection

Have a specialist inspect the car, scan for fault codes and test the suspension, gearbox and 4WD. For Range Rovers, test the air suspension. For V8s and Prados, check injectors and turbos on diesels.

5. Duty status

Make sure all duty is paid. Ex-diplomatic and duty-free cars may carry unpaid duty. Read our duty exemptions guide.

Clean title and verified mileage cars

Sellers often advertise "clean title" or "verified mileage". In Kenya, a clean title means a clear logbook with no encumbrances and no outstanding duty. Verified mileage should come with documents: an auction sheet, export certificate or service records. Ask for them before paying.

Importing from Dubai to Kenya

Dubai has a large market for luxury cars, including G-Wagons, Land Cruisers and Range Rovers, and some Kenyan buyers browse sites like DubiCars. However, most UAE cars are left-hand drive, and Kenya generally requires right-hand drive. Moreover, GCC-spec cars may have different features. As a result, Japan and the UK are usually better sources for Kenyan buyers.

Selling or trading in your car

Want to sell your G-Wagon, Harrier or Prado, or trade it in? Local sites like Jiji reach many buyers. Alternatively, sell to a dealer for speed. We can advise on your car's value so you plan your next import properly.

When a locally used car makes sense

Buy locally when you need a car immediately, when you want a model older than the import window, or when you find a well-documented car at a fair price. Otherwise, a fresh import usually gives better value and peace of mind.

locally used vs imported car in Kenya: FAQs

Is it better to buy a car on Jiji or import?
Jiji is good for checking prices and finding cars quickly, but listings are not verified. A fresh import gives verified mileage, clear history and better resale.
How do I check a locally used car in Kenya?
Run an NTSA logbook search, match chassis and engine numbers, check service history and mileage, get a mechanical inspection and confirm all duty is paid.
Can I import a car from Dubai to Kenya?
It is possible for right-hand-drive cars, but most UAE cars are left-hand drive, which Kenya generally does not allow. Japan and the UK are usually better sources.
What does clean title mean in Kenya?
A clear NTSA logbook with no bank or other encumbrance and no outstanding duty.
Why are locally used Range Rovers cheaper?
Many are older than the import window and have unclear history. They often need expensive repairs soon after purchase.
