Every imported car reaches Kenya by sea, almost always through the port of Mombasa. The shipping line, the loading port and the shipping method decide how long your car takes, what it costs and how safe it is on the way. This guide explains the main options from Japan and the UK.
RoRo vs container: a quick recap
RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ships carry cars driven on and off like a floating car park. RoRo is usually the cheapest option for a single running car. Container shipping puts the car inside a steel box, alone or shared with others. It offers more protection and suits high-value cars. Read our RoRo vs container guide.
Shipping lines from Japan to Mombasa
RoRo carriers
Major car carriers on Japan–East Africa routes include Japanese lines such as NYK Line, MOL and K Line, as well as global RoRo operators. Services and schedules change, so the right line depends on the month and the loading port. As a rule, RoRo sailings from Japan to Mombasa run regularly because of strong Kenyan demand.
Container lines
Container lines such as MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM and ONE carry containers from Japanese ports to Mombasa, often with a transhipment in Asia or the Middle East. Containers are popular for consolidating several cars or for shipping high-value vehicles.
Loading ports in Japan
Most cars load at Yokohama, Nagoya, Kobe or Osaka, with some sailings from other ports. Auction location matters, since moving a car across Japan to the port adds cost and time. Container consolidators operate around major hubs, including the Tokai region near Nagoya.
Japan to Mombasa transit time
RoRo transit from Japan to Mombasa usually takes about four to six weeks, depending on route and stops. Containers with transhipment can take a little longer. Add time for inspection, booking and clearing.
Shipping lines from the UK to Mombasa
RoRo carriers
RoRo services from Europe to East Africa are run by car carriers such as Höegh Autoliners and Wallenius Wilhelmsen, among others. Services vary over time, so we check current sailings for each car.
Container lines
Container lines including MSC, Maersk and CMA CGM ship from UK ports to Mombasa, often via a European or Middle Eastern hub.
Loading ports in the UK
RoRo cars usually load at Southampton, Portbury (Bristol) or other ports with RoRo services. Containers often load at Tilbury, London Gateway, Felixstowe or Southampton. The best port depends on the sailing and where the car is collected.
UK to Mombasa transit time
UK to Mombasa usually takes about five to seven weeks by RoRo, sometimes more with transhipment. Read our UK import guide.
What affects shipping cost?
Shipping cost depends on several factors. First, the car's size, measured by volume in cubic metres (CBM). A Land Cruiser takes far more space than a Vitz, so it costs more. Second, RoRo versus container. Third, the season and demand on the route. Fourth, fuel surcharges and currency rates. Finally, port charges at both ends.
When comparing quotes, check whether the price is FOB (car loaded at the export port) or CIF (car, insurance and freight to Mombasa). A CIF price does not include Kenyan duty or clearing.
Consolidation and shared containers
Sharing a 40-foot container with other cars cuts the cost per car while keeping the protection of a container. It works well for smaller cars and buyers importing several vehicles. However, you may wait until the container is full.
Marine insurance
Marine insurance covers your car against loss or damage at sea and during loading. Total-loss cover is cheaper but only pays if the car is lost. All-risk cover also pays for damage. We include marine insurance on every import.
Tracking your ship with MarineTraffic
Once your car is loaded, you receive a bill of lading with the vessel name and voyage number. You can then follow the ship on free tracking sites such as MarineTraffic or VesselFinder, or on the shipping line's own website. We share tracking updates with you too.
When the ship reaches Mombasa
After the vessel docks, cars are discharged, verified and cleared. Then you can collect or have the car delivered. Read our Mombasa clearing guide and our Mombasa to Nairobi transport guide.
