The Mazda CX-5 price in Kenya starts at about KES 2.8M for a compliant 20S petrol and reaches KES 4.1M for an XD diesel 4WD. That makes it one of the best-value premium-feeling SUVs on Kenyan roads. In fact, the CX-5 has become a favourite of young professionals and families from Kileleshwa to Kisumu.
Mazda's KODO design, quality cabin and sharp handling make the CX-5 feel more expensive than it is. Moreover, its SkyActiv engines are efficient. However, the diesel version needs the right kind of driving. Therefore, choosing the right engine matters as much as the price.
This guide covers every importable CX-5 grade, petrol vs diesel, the KF and KE generations, running costs, common issues and resale value. Furthermore, it explains how Elisa Motors imports a CX-5 from Japan with one fixed price in Kenya shillings.

CX-5 generations: KE vs KF
KE CX-5 (2012–2017)
The first-generation KE introduced SkyActiv engines and became popular in Kenya. However, every KE is now outside the 8-year window. You will only find them locally, often with high mileage.
KF CX-5 (2017 onwards)
The second-generation KF has a more refined cabin, better sound insulation and sharper styling. Every CX-5 you can import in 2026 is a KF. Later updates added a larger screen, improved safety systems and, on some Japanese grades, a 2.5 turbo petrol.
CX-5 grades explained
20S: the value choice
The 20S 2.0 petrol lands at about KES 2.8M – 3.2M. It is front-wheel drive and economical. Consequently, it suits Nairobi commuters who mostly drive on tarmac.
25S L Package 4WD
The 25S L Package 4WD costs about KES 3.3M – 3.8M. It adds leather, all-wheel drive and a stronger 2.5 engine. Moreover, it is the best all-rounder for mixed roads.
XD diesel
The XD 2.2 diesel 4WD lands at about KES 3.5M – 4.1M. It has strong torque and excellent highway economy. However, it needs regular long drives to stay healthy.

Mazda CX-5 XD 2.2 Diesel 4WD. This version uses a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 190 hp, a 6-speed automatic gearbox and AWD. As a result, it returns about 17 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 3.5M – 4.1M.

Petrol or diesel CX-5?
The diesel XD returns about 16–18 km/L on the highway and pulls strongly when loaded. Therefore, it suits buyers who drive long distances, such as Nairobi to Nakuru or Eldoret, regularly.
However, the diesel has a particulate filter that needs highway runs to clean itself. Short town trips can clog it and cause carbon build-up. In contrast, the petrol versions avoid these issues. Read our CX-5 diesel problems guide for detail.

CX-5 fuel consumption
The 20S returns about 14 km/L in mixed driving. The 25S returns slightly less. Meanwhile, the XD diesel returns about 16–18 km/L on the highway. Therefore, the diesel is the most economical for long trips.
CX-5 maintenance in Kenya
Mazda parts are widely available in Nairobi, including on Kirinyaga Road and in Industrial Area. Service every 5,000–10,000 km depending on use. Moreover, use the correct low-ash oil in diesel engines.
CX-5s with i-stop need a specific battery type. Replace it with the correct battery, or the stop-start system may not work properly.
Common CX-5 issues
Diesel carbon build-up and DPF clogging are the most common issues. Petrol CX-5s are simpler. In addition, side mirrors are a theft target in some Nairobi areas. Many owners engrave or secure them.
CX-5 vs rivals
The Toyota Harrier is more comfortable and offers a hybrid. The Subaru Forester offers standard AWD and better ground clearance. Meanwhile, the Nissan X-Trail offers seven seats for less. Read our CX-5 vs Harrier comparison.
Within Mazda, the CX-30 is smaller and cheaper, while the CX-8 offers seven seats.
CX-5 resale value
The CX-5 holds its value reasonably well. Soul Red, white and grey are popular colours. However, it depreciates slightly faster than the Harrier. A full service record and verified mileage help a lot.
CX-5 buying checklist
First, confirm the first registration date is 2019 or later. Second, verify the mileage. Third, on diesels, check for warning lights and smooth idling. Then test the screen, cameras and safety systems. Finally, compare with a fresh import quote.
Is the CX-5 good on rural roads?
Yes, for good murram and tarmac. It has decent ground clearance and optional AWD. However, it is not a heavy-duty 4x4. For very rough roads, consider a Forester or Prado.
Popular CX-5 colours and options
Soul Red Crystal is Mazda's signature colour and very popular. White and Machine Grey also sell well. Moreover, the Bose audio, leather seats and 360-degree camera are popular options.
CX-5 prices by year
A 2019 CX-5 is the cheapest importable option. It drops out of the import window in 2027, so it is at its cheapest now. A 2020 or 2021 car often adds a larger screen and updated safety systems. Meanwhile, 2022 and newer facelifted cars cost the most.
For most buyers, a 2020–2021 25S L Package offers the best balance of price, features and longevity. Similarly, a 2020–2021 XD suits long-distance drivers.
Who should buy a CX-5?
The CX-5 suits buyers who enjoy driving and want a quality cabin at a fair price. It is ideal for young professionals, couples and small families. Moreover, it suits buyers moving up from a Fielder, Axio or Demio.
However, it is a five-seater with a modest boot compared with larger SUVs. Families who need seven seats should consider the CX-8. Similarly, buyers who need serious off-road ability should look at a Prado or Forester.
CX-5 vs CX-8 vs CX-30
The CX-30 is smaller and cheaper. It suits singles and couples in the city. The CX-5 is the all-rounder. Meanwhile, the CX-8 adds a third row and more space for families. All three share Mazda's quality feel and SkyActiv engines.
Mazda CX-8 specifications by version
Here is how each Mazda CX-8 version we import compares. All of them seat 7, and you can import them from Japan.
Mazda CX-8 25S 2.5. This version uses a 2.5-litre petrol engine with 190 hp, a 6-speed automatic gearbox and two-wheel drive. In addition, it returns about 12 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 3.8M – 4.4M.
Mazda CX-8 XD L Package 2.2 Diesel AWD. This version uses a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 190 hp, a 6-speed automatic gearbox and AWD. Moreover, it returns about 15 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 4.4M – 5.2M.
Every Mazda CX-8 we import includes these key features: 7-seat SUV, 2.2 diesel option, AWD, leather & Bose and tarmac-focused comfort.
Protecting your CX-5 in Nairobi
CX-5 side mirrors have been a theft target in parts of Nairobi. Many owners engrave mirror glass with the registration number, fit mirror locks or park in secure areas. Moreover, a tracker and an alarm deter thieves and help with insurance.
First-year ownership tips
After delivery, book a full service with the correct oil. On diesels, plan regular highway drives. Then fit a tracker and check the i-stop battery health. In addition, convert the infotainment to English if needed.
Keep a record of every service. As a result, you protect your resale value and make future diagnosis easier.
CX-5 prices in Nairobi vs upcountry
Direct import prices are the same across Kenya. Only delivery differs. However, showroom prices include margin and stocking costs. Consequently, a fresh import often costs less than a yard CX-5 of the same year. Buyers in Eldoret, Kisumu and Meru often save the most.
Subaru Forester: the all-weather rival
Here is how each Subaru Forester version we import compares. All of them seat 5, and you can import them from Japan.
Subaru Forester Touring 2.0i. This version uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 145 hp, a cvt automatic gearbox and AWD. In addition, it returns about 13 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 3M – 3.5M.
Subaru Forester Premium 2.5i. This version uses a 2.5-litre petrol engine with 184 hp, a cvt automatic gearbox and AWD. Moreover, it returns about 13 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 3.3M – 3.8M.
Subaru Forester Advance e-Boxer Hybrid. This version uses a 2.0-litre hybrid engine with 158 hp, a cvt automatic gearbox and AWD. As a result, it returns about 14 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 3.4M – 3.9M.
Every Subaru Forester we import includes these key features: symmetrical AWD, 220 mm ground clearance, X-Mode for mud & gravel, eyeSight safety and e-Boxer hybrid option.
The Forester has standard all-wheel drive and more ground clearance than the CX-5. As a result, it handles muddy upcountry roads with more confidence. However, the CX-5 has a more premium cabin and sharper handling on tarmac. Therefore, choose the Forester if you often drive on rough roads in places like Nyeri, Meru or Kericho. Choose the CX-5 if you mostly drive in Nairobi and on the highways. Read our Subaru import guide for more on the Forester.
CX-5 for ride-hailing and business
Some premium ride-hailing drivers in Nairobi use the CX-5. Its quality cabin impresses passengers. However, the petrol version suits stop-start city work better than the diesel. Moreover, check each platform's vehicle rules before buying. Similarly, small businesses use the CX-5 as a smart client vehicle that is still affordable to run. As a result, it works well for consultants, estate agents and sales teams who travel between Nairobi, Thika and Machakos.
Finally, the CX-5's safety scores are excellent. Features such as blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking add real peace of mind for families on busy roads like Thika Road, Waiyaki Way and Mombasa Road every day. They are standard on most grades we import.
Where we deliver CX-5s
We serve buyers across Nairobi, including Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Westlands, Lavington, South B, South C, Syokimau, Ruaka and Karen. We also serve Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, Thika, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Machakos, Meru and Kericho. At the coast, we serve Mombasa, Nyali and Diani.
