The Land Rover Discovery price in Kenya starts at about KES 7.5M for a compliant Discovery 5 SD4 and reaches KES 9.5M for a TD6 HSE. Meanwhile, the smaller Discovery Sport starts at about KES 4.8M. Both offer seven seats, which makes them popular with families in Karen, Kiambu and Nakuru.
The Discovery has always been Land Rover's family 4x4. It combines real off-road ability with a practical cabin. However, the Discovery 5 and Discovery Sport are very different cars. Therefore, this guide explains both, so you can choose the right one.
We cover landed prices, engines, trims, running costs and buying tips. Furthermore, we explain how Elisa Motors imports a Discovery from the UK or Japan with one fixed price in Kenya shillings.

Discovery 5 vs Discovery Sport
Discovery 5: the full-size family 4x4
The Discovery 5 is a large, seven-seat SUV with air suspension, low-range gearing and a huge cabin. The SD4 HSE 2.0 lands at about KES 7.5M – 8.8M. Meanwhile, the TD6 HSE 3.0 costs about KES 8M – 9.5M.
Its third row fits adults, not just children. Moreover, it can tow heavy loads and wade deep water. Consequently, it suits large families who travel upcountry often.
Discovery Sport: the compact seven-seater
The Discovery Sport shares its platform with the Evoque. The Discovery Sport D180 SE lands at about KES 4.8M – 5.6M. The P250 HSE costs about KES 5.2M – 6M.
Its third row is best for children. However, it is easier to park and cheaper to run. Therefore, it suits city families who occasionally need seven seats.
Discovery 4 vs Discovery 5
Many Kenyans search for Discovery 4 prices. The Discovery 4 ended production in 2016. As a result, it cannot be imported in 2026. You will only find it locally, often with high mileage.
The Discovery 5 arrived in 2017. It is lighter, more refined and more modern inside. In fact, the 2021 facelift added Pivi Pro infotainment and new six-cylinder mild-hybrid engines. If your budget allows, a facelifted car is the best buy.
Discovery engines
The 2.0 SD4 diesel is economical and adequate for most buyers. The 3.0 TD6 V6 diesel is smoother and stronger, especially when the car is full. Later cars use the 3.0 six-cylinder D250 and D300 mild-hybrid diesels, which are even better.
Petrol versions exist but are rarer in export stock. Similarly, the Discovery Sport offers diesel, petrol and a P300e plug-in hybrid. For most Kenyan families, a diesel is the right choice.

Our services: Discovery imports across Kenya
Elisa Motors manages your whole Discovery import. Here is what we do for families and businesses in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret and beyond.
1. Discovery sourcing from the UK
The UK has the widest choice of Discovery 5 and Discovery Sport models. Approved-used cars come with warranties and full service records. We search for your engine, trim, colour and budget.
MOT history confirms the mileage. Read our guide to importing Land Rovers from the UK.
2. Discovery sourcing from Japan
Japan offers fewer Discoveries, but often with very low mileage. Auction sheets document condition clearly. In addition, we translate and explain each sheet.
See our auction sheet guide for how grading works.
3. Landed cost quote in Kenya shillings
Our quote covers the car, freight, insurance, KRA duty, port charges, clearing and registration. In other words, one complete figure.
We can compare a Discovery 5 with a Discovery Sport or a Prado. For instance, many families find the Discovery 5 TD6 close in price to a Prado TX-L diesel.
4. Inspection and history checks
We check the air suspension, third-row seats, electronics and underbody. Moreover, we run history checks for finance and write-off markers.
Every car passes the KEBS-appointed inspection. You see photos and video before we buy.
5. Shipping, clearing and registration
We ship to Mombasa by RoRo or container. Our clearing team handles KRA, KPA and verification. Subsequently, we register the car with NTSA and fit plates.
Read our Mombasa clearing guide for detail.
6. Delivery across Kenya
We deliver to Nairobi areas including Karen, Runda, Kiambu Road, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Syokimau and Ruaka. We also deliver to Thika, Ruiru, Machakos and Kitengela.
Upcountry, we serve Nakuru, Naivasha, Eldoret, Kisumu, Kericho, Nyeri, Nanyuki and Meru. On the coast, we deliver to Mombasa, Nyali, Kilifi and Diani.
7. Finance and insurance support
We provide pro-forma invoices and documents for bank asset finance. In addition, we connect you with insurers and tracking providers.
Read our car finance and insurance guide.
Discovery vs Prado vs Volvo XC90
The Toyota Prado wins on reliability, parts supply and resale value. It is also simpler to maintain upcountry. However, the Discovery 5 is more comfortable on tarmac and has a roomier third row.
The Volvo XC90 is a refined seven-seater with excellent safety. Still, it is less capable off-road. Meanwhile, the Defender 110 offers more style and capability at a higher price.
Discovery running costs in Kenya
Fuel
The SD4 returns roughly 12–13 km/L on the highway. The TD6 returns about 10–11 km/L. Meanwhile, the Discovery Sport D180 can reach 15 km/L. Therefore, the Sport is the cheapest to run.
Servicing and parts
Plan for a service every 15,000 km or once a year at a Land Rover specialist. Air suspension on the Discovery 5 is the main long-term cost. In contrast, the Discovery Sport uses coil springs, which are simpler.
Read our Land Rover maintenance guide for detailed costs.
Insurance
Insurance follows the car's value. Most insurers require an approved tracker for Land Rovers. We can fit one before delivery.
Discovery prices by year
2019 and 2020 Discovery 5s are the cheapest importable cars. The 2021 facelift raises prices thanks to better infotainment and engines. Similarly, the Discovery Sport received a major update in 2020 with a new platform and mild-hybrid engines.
Remember that the 8-year window moves each year. In 2027, 2019 cars will no longer qualify. Therefore, if you want the cheapest importable Discovery, act this year.
Discovery buying checklist
First, confirm the registration date is 2019 or later. Second, check the service history and mileage. Third, test the air suspension, third-row seats and power tailgate. Then scan for fault codes and test every screen.
Finally, check the tyres and brakes, which work hard on a heavy seven-seater. We complete this checklist on every Discovery we import.
Discovery for families: practical tips
The Discovery 5 has ISOFIX points on several seats, so it handles multiple child seats well. In addition, the rear seats can be folded electrically in many versions. That makes switching between passengers and luggage easy.
For school runs in Nairobi, the Discovery Sport may be easier to park. However, for holidays to the coast or the Mara, the Discovery 5 is far more comfortable for seven people.
How capable is the Discovery off-road?
The Discovery 5 is genuinely capable. It has air suspension that raises the body, a two-speed transfer box and Terrain Response modes for mud, sand and rocks. Moreover, its wading depth handles flooded roads during the long rains.
It copes well with Mara tracks, Laikipia ranch roads and muddy routes in western Kenya. However, its size can make tight forest trails awkward. In those conditions, a shorter vehicle such as a Defender 90 is easier to place.
The Discovery Sport is less capable. It has all-wheel drive and Terrain Response, but no low-range gearbox. Therefore, treat it as a tough family SUV rather than an expedition vehicle.
Discovery Sport vs Range Rover Evoque
The Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque share engines and much of their structure. However, they serve different buyers. The Evoque focuses on style and a premium cabin. In contrast, the Discovery Sport focuses on space, with a taller roof and a third row.
Prices are similar for the same year and engine. Therefore, the choice comes down to whether you need the extra seats. Read our Evoque price guide to compare.
Options worth paying for
Several options add real value in Kenya. The panoramic roof brightens the cabin for passengers on long trips. Rear climate control keeps the third row comfortable in Mombasa heat. Moreover, the 360-degree camera makes parking a large Discovery much easier in Nairobi malls.
A towing pack is useful if you pull a boat or a trailer. Similarly, the Activity Key lets you lock the car while swimming or hiking without carrying the main key. In contrast, very large wheels hurt comfort on rough roads, so we recommend 19- or 20-inch wheels.
First-year ownership tips
After delivery, book a full service with fresh oil, filters and brake fluid. Then ask a specialist to check for software updates. In addition, fit an approved tracker and keep the key in a signal-blocking pouch at home.
Drive the diesel on the highway regularly so the particulate filter can clean itself. Meanwhile, check the tyre pressures monthly. A heavy seven-seater wears tyres faster when pressures are low.
Discovery prices in Nairobi vs Mombasa
A direct import costs the same wherever you live. Duty, clearing and registration do not change by county. Only delivery from Mombasa differs.
Showroom prices vary much more. As a result, a fresh import often costs less than a local Discovery of the same year. Buyers in Eldoret, Kisumu and Kitale usually save the most, because local stock there is scarce.
Who should buy a Discovery?
The Discovery 5 suits large families who travel often and want comfort over long distances. It also suits lodge owners and consultants who need a refined vehicle for clients. Meanwhile, the Discovery Sport suits younger families in Nairobi who need occasional extra seats.
However, buyers in very remote areas should weigh servicing access carefully. A Prado or Land Cruiser is easier to repair far from a specialist. In contrast, Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa owners have good access to Land Rover experts.
Discovery resale value
The Discovery depreciates faster than a Prado. However, a well-maintained diesel with service records still sells well. White and grey cars sell fastest. In addition, buyers pay more for cars with the 2021 facelift and six-cylinder engines. Therefore, keep your service file complete from the very first day.
