NTSA registration of an imported car in Kenya is the final official step before you can drive legally. After your car clears customs at Mombasa, it must be registered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). Registration gives the car Kenyan number plates and a logbook in the owner's name. Therefore, it turns an imported vehicle into a Kenyan vehicle.
This guide explains the documents needed, how plates and logbooks work, typical timelines, transfer of ownership and common problems. Moreover, it explains how Elisa Motors registers every car we import.
NTSA procedures and fees change from time to time and are handled through its online systems. As a result, always check the current requirements on official channels or with your importer.
When does registration happen?
Registration follows customs clearance. Once KRA has assessed and received duty and the car is released, the customs data is used for registration. In practice, registration and plate allocation often happen soon after release. Read our Mombasa clearing guide.
Documents needed
Registration relies on customs release information, vehicle details such as the chassis number, make, model, engine and year, and the owner's details. Individuals need a KRA PIN and ID or passport. Companies need their registration documents and KRA PIN. Moreover, names must match across all records.
Number plates
Kenyan plates follow a series that advances over time as new vehicles are registered. Your car receives the next available number in the current series, unless you choose a personalised plate. Plates are produced to official standards and fitted to the car.
Many buyers ask which series is current. It changes regularly, so your importer can tell you at the time of registration.
Personalised plates
NTSA offers personalised number plates for an extra fee. Owners choose a custom combination, subject to approval. However, they take longer to process. Therefore, apply early if you want one ready for collection.
The logbook
The logbook is the official record of the vehicle's registration and ownership. Kenya has moved to digital logbook records managed through NTSA's systems. The registered owner can view the vehicle's details online. Moreover, the logbook is essential when you sell, insure or finance the car.
Registering in a company name
Businesses can register vehicles in the company's name. Use the company's KRA PIN consistently on the bill of lading and customs entry. Similarly, banks financing the car may be recorded as joint owners until the loan is paid. Read our car finance guide.
Transfer of ownership
When you sell a car, ownership is transferred through NTSA's online system. Both seller and buyer complete their parts. Moreover, transfer fees apply. Never hand over a car or accept full payment without completing the transfer properly.
Inspection for some vehicles
Some vehicles, such as commercial vehicles and PSVs, need additional inspection and licensing. Read our commercial vehicle guide. Private cars generally need only the standard registration process after import.
Common registration problems
First, mismatched names between customs records and the owner. Second, wrong chassis numbers in the data. Third, duty exemption vehicles with restrictions on transfer. Fourth, delays caused by incomplete customs release. Each can hold up registration. Therefore, accurate documents from the start matter.
Registration and duty-exempt vehicles
Vehicles imported under duty exemptions, such as some diplomatic or returning resident imports, may carry restrictions. Selling them early can trigger duty. Read our duty exemptions guide.

Step by step: from release to plates
Here is how registration usually flows. First, customs release confirms duty is paid and the car is cleared. Next, the vehicle and owner details are captured for registration. Then a registration number is allocated from the current series. After that, plates are produced and fitted. Finally, the logbook record is created in the owner's name.
When everything is in order, this happens quickly. However, errors in names, PINs or chassis numbers cause delays. Therefore, we check every detail before the car arrives.
Registration timelines
Registration is usually completed within days of release when records are correct. Personalised plates take longer. Moreover, public holidays and system downtime can add delays. As a result, plan your collection date with some flexibility.
Insurance and registration
You need insurance before driving the car on public roads. Most insurers can issue cover using the chassis number before plates arrive, then update the registration number later. Similarly, many require a tracker for higher-value cars. Read our car insurance guide.
Checking a car's registration before buying locally
If you buy a locally registered car, check its record through official NTSA channels with the owner. Confirm the owner's identity, any joint ownership with a bank and any caveats. Moreover, check that the chassis number on the car matches the record. In addition, verify the import history and mileage. Read our mileage check guide.
Logbook loans and joint ownership
Some owners use their car as security for a logbook loan. In that case, the lender may be recorded on the logbook. Similarly, bank-financed cars often show the bank as joint owner until the loan is repaid. Therefore, always check for joint ownership before buying a used car. The seller must clear the loan before transfer.
Registration for commercial vehicles and PSVs
Vans, trucks and passenger service vehicles may need extra inspection, licences and specific features. For example, a Hiace used as a matatu needs PSV licensing. Read our commercial vehicle guide and luxury van guide.
