Choosing between a Land Cruiser V8, a Nissan Patrol and a Range Rover Sport is one of the biggest car decisions a Kenyan buyer can make. All three are powerful, comfortable and capable. However, they differ sharply in reliability, running costs, comfort and resale value. Therefore, the right choice depends on how and where you drive.
This guide compares them head to head. It covers landed prices, engines, comfort, off-road ability, fuel, maintenance and resale. Moreover, it adds the Lexus LX and Mercedes G-Class, which many buyers also consider. Finally, it explains how Elisa Motors can quote all of them side by side.

The Nissan Patrol is usually the cheapest of the big three for a similar year. The Range Rover Sport spans a wide range. Meanwhile, the LC300 is the most expensive, but it holds value best.
Engines and performance
Toyota Land Cruiser
The LC200 uses a 4.5 V8 diesel or 4.6 V8 petrol. The LC300 uses a 3.3 twin-turbo V6 diesel or 3.5 twin-turbo V6 petrol with a 10-speed gearbox. Both are strong and smooth. Moreover, the LC300 diesel is the most efficient of the group.
Nissan Patrol
The Patrol LE 5.6 V8 lands at about KES 13M – 16M. Its 5.6 petrol V8 makes about 400 hp. It is very fast for its size. However, it uses a lot of fuel, especially in town.
Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport offers diesel, petrol and plug-in hybrid engines. The SDV6 and newer six-cylinder diesels balance power and economy well. In addition, the hybrids can run on electricity for short trips.
Comfort and luxury
The Range Rover Sport wins on cabin design, materials and on-road refinement. Its air suspension glides over Nairobi roads. The Patrol is spacious and comfortable, with a big, soft ride. Meanwhile, the Land Cruiser is comfortable and quiet, though slightly less plush than the Range Rover.
For rear-seat passengers, the Patrol and Land Cruiser offer more space than the Sport. Both offer seven or eight seats. In contrast, the Sport is mainly a five-seater.
Off-road ability
All three are capable. The Land Cruiser and Patrol use body-on-frame designs, which are tough on very rough roads. The LC300 GR Sport with locking differentials is especially capable. The Range Rover Sport uses a monocoque body with air suspension and Terrain Response, which works brilliantly but relies on electronics.
For remote expeditions far from specialists, most experts prefer the Land Cruiser. As a result, NGOs and safari operators choose Toyota.
Reliability
The Land Cruiser has the strongest reliability reputation in Kenya. Parts are everywhere, and many mechanics know it well. The Patrol is also reliable, with a simple, durable V8. However, parts are less widespread than Toyota's.
The Range Rover Sport is the most complex. Newer models are much improved. Still, it needs specialist care and quality parts. Read our Range Rover maintenance guide.
Fuel consumption
The LC300 3.3 diesel returns about 10–11 km/L on the highway. The LC200 V8 diesel returns about 8–10 km/L. The Range Rover Sport diesel returns about 11–13 km/L. Meanwhile, the Patrol 5.6 V8 petrol returns roughly 6–7 km/L.
Therefore, the Patrol costs the most in fuel. Read our Land Cruiser fuel and maintenance guide.
Resale value in Kenya
The Land Cruiser wins clearly. A well-kept V8 or LC300 sells quickly and for a strong price. The Range Rover Sport depreciates faster but still sells well with full history. The Patrol depreciates fastest of the three in Kenya.
As a result, the Land Cruiser's higher purchase price is often offset by its resale value.
The Lexus LX and Mercedes G-Class
The Lexus LX shares Land Cruiser engineering with more luxury. It lands from about KES 17M. It offers Toyota reliability with a premium cabin. However, it costs more to buy.
The Mercedes G-Class is the most iconic and most expensive, from about KES 20M. It is very capable off-road but costly to run. Read our G-Wagon price guide.
Which should you choose?
Choose the Land Cruiser if you value reliability, resale and remote-area capability. Choose the Patrol if you want V8 power and space at a lower price and do not mind fuel costs. Choose the Range Rover Sport if you want the most luxurious, refined drive and have access to specialist servicing.
Choose the Lexus LX if you want Land Cruiser toughness with more luxury. Finally, choose the G-Class if you want the ultimate statement and can afford the running costs.

Best choice for common Kenyan scenarios
Daily Nairobi commute plus weekend trips
A Range Rover Sport diesel or LC300 diesel works best. The Sport is more refined in town. However, the LC300 is more relaxed on rough weekend roads.
Large family with frequent upcountry travel
The LC300 or LC200 with seven or eight seats is ideal. Similarly, the Patrol offers lots of space if fuel cost is less important.
NGO or remote field work
The Land Cruiser is the clear choice. Parts and mechanics are available even in remote counties.
Executive image
The Range Rover, Lexus LX or G-Class make the strongest statement. In contrast, the LC300 ZX combines image with practicality.
Nissan Patrol at a glance
Here is how each Nissan Patrol version we import compares. All of them seat 8, and you can import them from South Africa.
Nissan Patrol LE 5.6 V8. This version uses a 5.6-litre petrol engine with 400 hp, a 7-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. In addition, it returns about 6 km/L and lands in Kenya at roughly KES 13M – 16M. Furthermore, compared with lower trims, it adds 8 seats, leather, Hydraulic Body Motion Control.
Every Nissan Patrol we import includes these key features: 5.6 V8, 8 seats, hydraulic Body Motion Control, full-time 4WD and luxury interior.
Seating, boot space and towing
The Land Cruiser 200 offers up to eight seats, and the LC300 seven. Both have useful boots with the third row folded. The Patrol is similar, with eight seats and a large cargo area. In contrast, the Range Rover Sport is mainly a five-seater, with an optional small third row on some versions.
For towing boats, horse boxes or trailers, all three are strong. However, body-on-frame Land Cruisers and Patrols handle heavy towing on rough roads with less strain. Therefore, ranchers and boat owners at the coast often prefer them.
Technology and safety
The Range Rover Sport leads on cabin technology, with large screens, advanced driver aids and premium audio. The LC300 has modern safety systems and a good touchscreen. Meanwhile, the LC200 and Patrol feel more traditional inside.
All three have strong safety records. Still, newer models add features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping help. As a result, a younger vehicle is safer on long highway trips.
Five-year ownership cost
When you include depreciation, fuel, servicing and insurance, the picture changes. The Land Cruiser often has the lowest true cost because it loses so little value. The Range Rover Sport loses more value and costs more to service. Meanwhile, the Patrol's fuel bill and depreciation add up.
Therefore, look beyond the purchase price. A car that costs more today may cost less over five years.
Test-drive tips
If you can, drive each vehicle on both tarmac and rough roads. Notice ride comfort, noise and visibility. Check how easy it is to park in a typical Nairobi mall. Moreover, sit in every row of seats and test the boot with your usual luggage.
Ask other owners about their experience. Owners' clubs and online groups in Kenya share honest feedback on parts, garages and common faults.
Locally used vs fresh import
Local yards sell many older V8s, Patrols and Range Rovers. Some are good. However, many fall outside the 8-year window or have unclear histories. In contrast, a fresh import gives you verified mileage and a known registration date. Read our mileage check guide.

Read our LC200 price guide and LC300 price guide for full details. Similarly, our Range Rover Sport guide explains every Sport engine and trim.
Quick verdict
In short, the Land Cruiser is the safest all-round choice. However, the Range Rover Sport is the most enjoyable on tarmac. Meanwhile, the Patrol gives the most power for the money. Consequently, there is no single winner for everyone. Instead, match the car to your roads, budget and servicing access. For example, a Karen family with a nearby specialist may love the Sport. In contrast, a Laikipia ranch should pick the Land Cruiser. Similarly, a buyer on a tighter budget who wants V8 power may prefer the Patrol.
Security and insurance
All of these vehicles are theft targets. Insurers usually require approved trackers. Moreover, steering locks and secure parking reduce risk. Premiums follow vehicle value, so the G-Class and LX cost the most to insure.
